But how are the motels that are on the road?

The motels usually found in the service areas of roads, or access to diverse populations. In each there is usually more of a different motel chains, with different levels of service quality

In general, roadside motels are common twin rooms spacious king size (large double). They tend to be clean and in good condition.

In short, they are decent rooms that offer a reasonable service, with enough equipment including towels in the bathrooms, television, and even coffee, for a price between 40 and 80 dollars a room.

The motel chains do not offer cheaper breakfast or just coffee you have, so we have breakfast in a setting of the area where the motel, which must be taken into account when calculating prices, it can quite expensive set the price.

In certain areas of the United States, like Arizona or Utah (especially Monument Valley and Grand Canyon), there is less supply of motels, so at times it is advisable to book tourist previous room.

In our U.S. trip , we have always sought hotels with wifi, with two queen beds (single) or king (marriage), with free parking (usually in the outskirts of urban areas is so), with breakfast included in the price, TV, and if he could be with fridge.

Normally we asked for our room on the ground floor. Thus we had to climb to the first floor suitcases (almost all highway motels have only a ground floor and first floor), and so we could park the car right in front of the room.

For location, we used various existing tourism websites for booking motels . In general, we used to stay in chain motels Ramada, Days Inn, Super 8, Travelogue, Knights Inn and Howard Johnson.

Sometimes, as in Monument Valley, we had to go to a Holiday Inn more expensive but only available in the area. Other chains, like Motel 6, which are cheaper but often do not have Internet or had to pay separately.

During our trip, we found that in Canada the same hotels are about 25 percent more expensive than in the United States.

This day our journey coast to coast by the United States has been essentially road.

We traveled from Dallas to Amarillo Travelogue motel. 583 miles have been traveled by the state of Texas in a very quiet day, a road da y.

En route we stopped at a rest area where we should have warned us to beware of rattlesnakes (Rattlesnakes).

The landscape is beginning to be very flat, as we will find the rest of our trip to Texas and New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada.

Major roads, very straight, with good temperatures and clear days and warm. Great for travel.

We ate at a McDonalds for the first and last time in our tour. It’s remarkable that we consider at least …

Halfway we deviate from the path to walk around the town of Wichita Falls . And toward the 16 hours we reached Amarillo and decided to stay and the motel to rest, to prepare future conferences via Internet and contacting family and friends.

Throughout the tour of Texas are many flags of Texas, unlike many other states, which clearly dominates the American flag. Both teach in Texas are on par.

Amarillo is located northwest Texas, near New Mexico. The city has about 200.000 inhabitants, and named for the yellow color of the shores of nearby Lake Amarillo.

Center livestock market in the late nineteenth century, large farms are spread throughout the Amarillo area. The city of Amarillo was once the self-proclaimed World Capital of helium as the center of one of the most productive helium. The city was also called as the Yellow Rose of Texas.

Some of the most remarkable sights are the Cadillac Ranch and the Texan Steak Ranch Great (specializing in steaks 2 kilos, which are free if you consume less than one hour), which are located on the famous Route 66 , which runs through the city.

Also, near the city is also the Palo Duro Canyon, a nature park we visit the next day.

At our stage in Dallas during the trip from coast to coast by the United States , we were able to recall one of the most popular television series of the years 70-80, Dallas.

Previously, we drove a town called Parker, which allowed us to better understand the world more residential and rural Texas. We went through the car for several estates and residential areas, some of very high economic level.

Admittedly, the American custom of many great houses, well maintained, follow each other without separation fences between them, has a visual impact far more appealing than the usual image of villas in Spain all separated by high fences.

Apparently, everyone knows where your land ends and should be responsible enough to keep it in good condition, with manicured lawns. Otherwise, be considered a bad neighbor to devalue the property.

Sourthfork Ranch located throughout the Internet. This mansion made famous by that TV series that dealt with the vicissitudes of the Ewing family (JR, Pat, Sue Ellen, Bobby, Jack, Elly, …), who lived on this ranch, which, after giving several turns the roads of the area, we locate and visit, after paying the relevant entry.

We report that in the television series Dallas appeared just outside Southfork Ranch, as the interiors are always recorded in California studios. Despite this, the ranch in the interior is decorated with photos and paintings as if they really Ewing family had lived there.

I guess it’s good business for the owners of the ranch, thanks to visits by tourists and the souvenir shop. I imagine the protagonists of the series and the producers also comprises part of the pie for lending his image.

However, regardless of whether Southfork Ranch was used in part for the TV series, is a real ranch, the truth, in which dwelt a family financially well positioned, as shown by their size, decor and quality furniture.

From there, back to the hotel, we turn to lose by residential areas around Dallas . We’ve really seen house prices, large and spacious, in a very idyllic and well maintained with lake / river built, and as always, American style, which gives still greater excellence to these residential areas.

Since the motel was a great opportunity to see the movie JFK by Oliver Stone, who looks almost exhaustive in detail everything that surrounds JFK and his assassination. Gained in intensity and excitement at being able to be physically in the places where historic events unfolded in Dallas.

So what we have seen in our long journey from coast to coast , where we have traveled over 18,000 miles.

For some strange reason, it’s easy, and upon reflection, we have reached the following conclusions on the reasons that lead an easy driving America’s highways.

Major interstate highways have at least two lanes are wide and comfortable

In general, the roads are well paved

Speed limits are very tight, downward and are respected by the vast majority of drivers

Highways United States, unlike European motorways, are more integrated into the landscape, “closer” of the environment

Both directions of travel these roads / motorways are generally separated by a several meters wide, which reduces the possible feeling of being overwhelmed

The road signs is the minimum necessary, in other words, prohibitions and directions are just

City streets in broad wide two-way you can always turn left, using either a center lane dedicated solely to it, or at traffic lights.

At intersections is always given the name of the street or road crosses.

The interstate highway exits always tell you the names of different brands of gasoline, restaurants and hotels to find the area of services as well as an indication of the nearby tourist attractions.

Anyway. All these features make the world pleasant driving in America.

Also be mentioned that in big cities there are direct rail to urban centers, through which cars can move, though, must have at least two passengers to use them.

On the other hand, many existing cross the STOP applies to all four sides of it, and mark the priority order of arrival of cars at STOP.

Now we are entering the mythical American West, our unconscious is reminiscent of the Indian tribes. Landscapes are large, beautiful, generous and even wild. The roads are endless, with long straight to the horizon, and followed by another line just to the next horizon.

The entire route is along the historic Route 66 , which sometimes becomes the interstate.

The semi-desert landscape, beautiful, plain, with mounds and hills of red, in a first approximation to the landscapes of the Grand Canyon.

For many miles are few areas of service, while I’ve been on many, particularly in Flying P. Ranch, Clines Corners and Indian Village.

Facilities are managed by native Indians, mostly Navajo, but also from other ethnic groups (Apache, Comanche and a few others), who sold many items from their crafts, which highlights the gold with turquoise stones.

This semi-desert landscape also shows sparsely populated, with few villages to see. What you can see is very simple character.

These areas of interstate service centers seem to honor the Native American Indians (in addition to commercial …) that were removed by force from their ancestral lands, very decimated and have lost the essence of his life. It is sad.

We stopped about five hours in Albuquerque, a city that takes its name from eponymous Extremadura. It is the largest city in the state of New Mexico, but not its capital, is the city of Santa Fe.

Albuquerque has a population of over half a million inhabitants and was founded in 1706 by Spanish settlers and still retains some aspects of the Spanish cultural and historical heritage. In Albuquerque, during the month of October, we celebrate the International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, the concentration of the world’s largest balloon.

We toured the city, first by car and then walk away. Initially, the modern part of town, where we ate a nice pizza. The food was served buffet was very good, well prepared and very crispy pizza.

We also visited the Palace of Congresses and Exhibitions, which was much activity and various exhibitions.

Then we went by car to the Old City of Albuquerque, strongly reminiscent of Mexican and Spanish, both in aesthetics, as in the type of food and crafts (pottery, galleries, …). There were a couple of hours walking in the main square and saw a very ancient chapel dedicated to St. Philip Neri.

The feeling that we left this city is that it would be nice to live, and once in one of our lives come to live here a long season.

Now we are in the mythical West. Great sense of space, long road, quiet, few cars, peace, harmony. The highway is alive and the road is life and was alive. There are roads and detours, land is hard and wild. There soul. And everything is beautiful, very beautiful!

Sun and heat: about 35 °, rain, temperatures drop to 19 / 20 º.

I recognize that we continue to attract residential visit various Americans.

Back in Amarillo, in our journey coast to coast by the United States retook the Old Historic Route 66 west, which do not leave until Phoenix in Arizona and, later, we return to its end at the pier of Santa Monica , Los Angeles in California.

Route 66 in this area share routes with Interstate 40. After losing some time, for real this time, we finally find the exit of the famous Cadillac Ranch Amarillo.

This is a place where there are half-buried in the ground ten old Cadillac cars. To find them, you indicated that you will find on the south side of Route 66 (I 40), about 9 miles west of Amarillo.

The Cadillac Ranch was built in 1974, following the idea and directed by Stanley Marsh, a millionaire thanks to the helium industry and owner of the wheat field full of dust which are placed those Cadillac.

Marsh and The Ant Farm, a San Francisco art collective, assembled used Cadillac representing the Golden Age of American cars (1949 to 1963).

The 10 cars, decorated with graffiti, are half buried by the front, facing west “at the same angle as the pyramids of Cheops.” This spot, whose access is free, has gained much fame, and the ground you will see many cans of paint graffiti. It was an experience say that “funny.”

We ate at a Dairy Queen route, establishment exclusively staffed by ladies of a certain age, all very nice.

We continued our route and arriving at Santa Rosa, we tour the town.

Santa Rosa is primarily a transit and rest. The population is small and has about 500 inhabitants residents. There are plenty of motels, hotels and restaurants, as it is half a tourist be on Route 66.

Then we also visited Santa Rosa Lake, about 10 miles from the town, a beautiful place.

After 5 days and 4 nights we left Texas, which we really liked. It occupies a vast plain and generally note the high economic level.

Texas takes you back a sense of spaciousness, long road, quiet, few cars, peace, harmony in the environment of a beautiful and generous nature. In some parts of the route are extracting oil pumps, which channel them towards a system carrying around storage tanks.

As a small anecdote about the day in the museum shop of the Palo Duro Canyon a woman has struck a bestial cry at the thought that he had brought in a picture that I was doing. He has apologized very much. As I said not to worry, that nothing happened, which would make another picture.

Her husband said that the cry had scared everybody, which was true: we had a terrified.

Today we covered the first 3.000 miles (4.827 km) trip. Great day, clear, sunny, hot, but nice.

Therefore, when planning your trip through Arizona and Utah, it is important to have foreseen the possible locations where you will be staying. And if you’re traveling at peak tourist season, it is recommended that you make the hotel reservation in advance .

In the case of the visit Monument Valley , the park with stunning views of the western movies, which is located in the vast Navajo Indian Reservation, just outside of Arizona and Utah, two locations are recommended for provide accommodation, Kayenta and Mexican Hat .

Kayenta is in Arizona, 50 miles south of Monument Valley. It is suitable to stay before you get to Monument Valley from the Grand Canyon, Route 160 and just turn left onto 163. Or, conversely, if after visiting the park you head south.

The route around the roads of northern Arizona are you going to make for great plains semi-desert, with long straights.

When you get to Kayenta not expect to find a great people. See that it’s a small town with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants and scattered groups of houses. But a good example of the strategic situation of Kayenta is that it has a small airport, and the service area where you can find hotels .

The four hotels in Kayenta are of the motel, average, and prices are higher than in hotels with similar characteristics, which makes sense given the lack of accommodation in this area of Arizona.

Next to one of the hotels, the Hampton Inn Kayenta, please visit the emulation of a small town in Navajo Indians with small fort and a pair of Indian houses built with earth, the traditional Navajo style.
