Deciding where to go and what to see in Wales? The best way to visualize the setting is to see it straight on and that’s easily done atop local well known hill, Moel Famau, between Mold and Ruthin in South Wales. From that vantage point, it’s 544m peak, the hill will give you a panorama of what is know as Loggerheads Country Park. While at the summit you’ll see the remains of Jubilee Tower, built in 1810 to celebrate the golden jubilee of King George III.
This historic area is home to a woodland wonderland steeped in ancient history like the Iron Age hill forts that dot the area and the main hill-fort on the top of the Clwydian hills range at 511m. It’s banks, moats and ditches are clearly visible and a major attraction. The history of this area was imbedded at the time of the Roman occupation of Britain, more than two thousand years ago.
Since the proliferation of rocky cliffs popular in this terrain practically calls out for this activity. Abseiling or as the yanks call it, rappelling, has made the Loggerheads Country Park a popular destination for those who want to hurl themselves off of perfectly good hill tops and bounce their way down the rocky cliff walls. To top it off, there’s the enjoyable act of just walking the moors and meadows for the absolutely beautiful displays of nature.
